March May Pumps

PUMP DESIGN

Developing new pumps has become a major strength of March May as a result of the company’s expertise in pump design, plastic moulding capability, CAD/CAM 3D systems, machine shop facilities and the breadth of our existing product portfolio.

We employ a practical approach to pump design that follows the following steps:

STEP 1 - YOUR REQUIREMENT

The startling point is to identify and fully understand your requirement this covers all aspects of the project

  • The applications flow, pressure, duty-cycle and liquid characteristics.
  • Other designs parameters such as acceptable noise levels, space requirements, flow characteristics.
  • Cost targets.
  • Profect time scales.
  • General commercial terms such as exclusivity.

STEP 2 - BEST ROUTE FORWARD

We then take the information away and identify the best way forward. In many cases this could be a modification / re-engineering of an existing product. If his option is not possible then a complete pump design is proposed.

In either case we will provide an estimated pump curve, budget costing and projected time scale.

STEP 3 - DESIGN PROTYPING

Whether we have proposed a new or modified pump our next step is to produce a design prototype:

  • To prove the design concept.
  • Confirm the pump curve.
  • Identify any manufacturing issues.

This prototype is asssessed at March May for reliability and longevity and made available to you for you to carry out your own evaluation tests.

For some projects, this process may require several iterations of prototype, and could require the creation of a limited number of mould tools in order to produce a prototype that matches the exact performance and design of the ultimate pump. Every different version is sent+ you for your approval

This is the most important stage of the process and we encourage our customers to trial the pump in the field pumping the actual liquid for as long as is possible.

STEP 4 - PRE - PRODUCTION SAMPLES

Once the design of the pump has been agreed, a number of pre production samples are produced whether they are modified pumps from our existing range or completely new models requiring new mould tools.

These are assessed within March May and then sent to you for your approval based on internal evaluation and external field trials.
